St. Andrea, Matka

Monastery of St. Andrea is located at about 17 kilometers, south-west of Skopje, in the gorge of the river Treska.

The monastery church, hidden in the steep cliffs on the shore of the lake Matka, attracts great attention with its picturesque look.
On the inscription located on the west entrance of the internal side, it is mentioned that the monastery church is erected by Andrea, the second son of King Volkašin, in year 1389.
On the inscription on the north side are written the names of the iconographer: Metropolitan Jovan painter and monk Gregorie. Metropolitan Jovan is known as an artist, which worked in the vicinity of Prilep, together with his brother Makarie. Their activity was concentrated in the monastery of St. Spas - in the village of Zrze, near Prilep, where they appear also as founders of the church that erected their grandfather monk German. However the name of the collaborator of Metropolitan John, in the fresco painting of church of St. Andrea, - monk Grigorie is not known, neither earlier, nor later, neither his activity is mentioned on some other monuments in Macedonia.
