Debar is city in the western part of the Republic of Macedonia with 14,561 inhabitants.
Located in Debar Valley, southwest of Mount Desat, on altitude of 700 m. It covers an area of 360 ha. The climate is changing continental with an average annual air temperature of 11,8 ° C (53.24 F) and average annual amount of precipitation of 890 mm.
Through Debar, passes regional road which connects the city northeast with Mavrovo and Gostivar and with Struga on south.
Debar settlement existed in the time of the Romans under the name Deborusa. For the first time Debar is mentioned in a charter of Basil II in 1019 as a place that belongs to Bitola bishop. It is an important center in the Middle Ages in western Macedonia.
In the first half of XIX century Ami Bue noted that there were 4,200 inhabitants, 64 shops, a mosque and caravan trade. The city had developed trade and crafts and the people of Debar were known as great builders of churches, carvers and painters. Neighborhood was ethnically mixed with Macedonian and Muslim population.
In 1900 population in the city increased to 15,000 inhabitants.
After World War I, when the border was set to Albania, Debar began functional and population decline, so that in 1931 there lived 7198 inhabitants.
Due to the specific peripheral geographical position even after World War II the city didn’t progressed much, and was left as the center of its immediate surroundings. However, the ethnic structure of the city is quite changed.
Today from total of 14,561 inhabitants, Macedonians are 1.059, Albanians 10.768 Turks 1.418, Roma 1.079 and other 245. Debar is center of Municipality of Debar which covers an area of 14,567 ha, with 18 settlements and total of 19,542 inhabitants.
Most of the population is employed in the textile industry, which is present in the city, also in the mining sector and agriculture. Debar has a gymnasium, health center, home culture, seismological station and other facilities. Near the town Banjishte and Kosovrashka Bath are located and the artificial lake Spilje.
