Demir Kapija is small Macedonian city located on the flow of Vardar River with population of 3275 inhabitants according to the 2002 census.
The city is located at the entrance to the Demir Kapija canyon, where river Boshava flows into the Vardar River, at an altitude of about 100 meters. It covers an area of 160 ha and has changing Mediterranean climate with mean annual air temperature of 13.6 ° C (56.4 F) and average amount of rainfall of 476 mm.
In the ancient period it is referred to as Stenos, which means strait, canyon or gorge. Slavic name of the settlement is “Prosek”, and it is mentioned in 11th and 12th century. Todays name was given by the Turks and in translation means Iron Gate.
Demir Kapija as town was proclaimed in 2004. Population is primarily Macedonians and minority includes only few Serbs (34). Demir Kapija is the seat of the municipality which covers an area of 31,106 ha, there are 15 settlements with 4.545 inhabitants. Main occupation is viticulture and the cultivation of early vegetables, especially peppers. The settlement has primary school, a home for disabled and health station.
