Kocani is city in the eastern part of the Republic of Macedonia with 28,330 inhabitants (2002).

Located on both sides of the Kocani river, at an altitude of about 350 m. Through Kocani leads highway M-5, which on west connects it with Veles and Stip and east Delcevo.

The city covers an area of 770 ha, and stretches trough the valley of Kocanska River and surrounding hills.

Kocani has a moderate continental climate with a Mediterranean influence. The average annual air temperature is 13,0 ° C (55.4 F) and the average annual rainfall 522 mm.

Kocani is first mentioned in a charter Despot Oliver in 1337.

Little is known about Kocani from the first centuries of Ottoman rule. According to Evliya Çelebi, in the second half of XVIII century it was a small town with 600 houses, had a mosque, an inn (han) and about 15 stores.

At the end of XIX century the city became known marketplace for rice and poppy. It settled quite Turks from Asia Minor, and became a Macedonian-Turkish settlement. Turks lived in the north, and the Macedonians in the southern part of the city.

Significant development Kocani had with the construction of the railway line in 1926, when it became the main rallying station for this part of eastern Macedonia.

The city began to rapidly grow in the second half of the last century. In 1953 there lived 8.034 inhabitants, and in 2002 that number increased to 28,330. Of them, 25,730 were Macedonians, Roma 1.951, 315 Turkish, 193 Vlachs and 63 Serbs.
Kocani is the seat of the Municipality of Kocani which covers an area of 36,036 ha, there are 28 settlements with 38,092 inhabitants. The main industries are: food, automotive, wood, cellulose-paper and textile industry.
The town has three primary and two secondary schools, home of culture, theater, public library and a health center. Of cultural and historical monuments has two feudal towers of XVI and XVIII c. and monument on hill Lokubija, erected in honor of the victims in the Ilinden Uprising and in the Second World War.
In the village Kuchichino has brick and tile factory, and in the village Spanchevo mine opalska brecha.

Kocani valley is known for the production of rice.
