National park Mavrovo is proclaimed in 1949. It extends into the flow of Radika river, on an area of 73.088 ha. The borders of the park include the mountains: Korab, Deshat, the southwestern branches of Shar Planina, most of the Bistra and northern parts of Krchin. The central part of the national park covers the valley of the river Radika. The Mavrovo artificial lake is also within the national park.
Within the boundaries of the Mavrovo National Park, there are over 50 mountain peaks with an altitude above 2000 meters, of which the peak Golem Korab (2764 m.asl), is the highest peak in Republic of Macedonia.
The Mavrovo National Park is characterized by an extraordinary floral life, consisting of over 1000 species of plants. The fauna of the national park Mavrovo is also characterized by considerable diversity. It consists of 140 species of birds, 11 species of amphibians, 12 species of reptiles and 38 types of mammals.
Regarding the use of the park, three zones are identified. Strictly protected zone covering Lukovo Pole, Adzina River and Ostrovo. Recreational tourist zone that covers a narrow strip around the Mavrovo Lake and the slopes of Bistra Mountain with the ski lifts and ski trails. And a melioration zone that covers “Vrbenska”, “Volkovska” forest and others.
