Mustafa Kemal was born in Salonika (Thessaloniki) in 1881. His father was Ali Rıza Efendi and his mother was Zübeyde Hanım. His grandfather Hafız Ahmet Efendi on his father’s side, was from Kocacık Yörüks (a nomadic shepherd tribe from Anatolia) that had come from Konya and Aydın and settled at Kocacık in Macedonia in the XIV – XV centuries. His mother Zübeyde Hanım was the member of an old Turkish family that had settled in the town of Langaza near Salonika.

After the graduation at the Secondary military school in Thessaloniki, Mustafa Kemal registered at the Bitola (Monastir) military high school with epaulet number 7348, and on March 13, 1896 he started his education.

Among the best students at his class he completed the education in Monastir (Bitola) Military High School in 1899 and started his education at the Military Academy in Istanbul.

He returned again in Bitola in 1907 when he was assigned to the 3rd Army as Senior Captain.
From Bitola he was transferred to Istanbul in 1909.
Аs a result of his successes, he quickly progresеd in his military and political career and in 1923 he was elected as the first President of Republic of Turkey. He served as President until his death in 1938.
His surname, Atatürk (“Father of the Turks”), was granted to him in 1934.

The memorial room in Bitola museum, represents a collection of objects and printed materials which depict the life and work of the great Turkish reformer.
What is especially interesting for the visitors, is the original building in which Mustafa Kemal studied, and also a pleasant walk through Bitola, will reveal a large number of buildings from that period .
One such special building is the house of Eleni Karinte, which according to a local legend was a great love of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.
