Tsar Samoil fortress (Самоилова тврдина) in Ohrid

Tsar Samoil fortress is considered one of the largest preserved fortifications in Macedonia. The fortress was first mentioned by the historian Titus Livy in the 3rd century BC, as a fortress of the city Lychnidos. Bigger more detailed description dates from the 5th century when the fortress was defended from tribal attacks during the Great Migration period.

Ohrid is a city in the southwestern part of the Republic of Macedonia with a population of 42,033 according to the 2002 census. Located on the northeast on Ohrid lake and hill Plaoshnik, at an altitude between 696 and 797 m. it covers an area of 1230 ha.
